Gombe Day Trip
Gombe Day Trip
Embark on a Gombe day trip from Kigoma, Tanzania to explore unforgettable wildlife and stunning landscapes. The Gombe Stream National Park is the smallest national park in the country but renowned for its chimpanzees, which gained fame through the pioneering research of Jane Goodall, who set up a chimpanzee research station here in 1960.
Covering only 52 square kilometers, Gombe features a stunning tropical forest that ascends steeply from the shores of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania. This unpaved park invites you to explore nature up close by walking through its lush landscapes.
Our day trip to Gombe departs daily at 6:00 am by boat from Kigoma, taking approximately one and a half hours. This chimpanzee day tour, often referred to as a weekend getaway, is perfect for travelers with limited time who wish to engage in chimpanzee trekking.
While the primary focus of the Gombe day trip is to trek chimpanzees, visitors will also encounter various other wildlife, including baboons, vervet monkeys, red colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and bush babies. Additionally, Gombe is home to a remarkable array of over 200 bird species, from the majestic fish eagle to the sparkling Peter’s twinspots that can be seen around the visitors’ center.
The park boasts thousands of plant and flower species, with Kakombe waterfall being a breathtaking highlight worth seeing. Enjoy a day in Gombe with its chimpanzees, before returning to Kigoma in time for sunset.
The best months to go for a day trip to Gombe is during the dry season (June to October) when the chimpanzees tend not to wander far, offering improved photo opportunities. The park typically experiences a wet season from February to June and again from November to mid-December.
Please remember that participants in chimpanzee trekking must be at least 15 years old.
